Macabre Tales to Chill You on a Dark, Stormy Night
Here are some great book recommendations designed to keep you up on those dark and stormy nights. Some of them you may have heard of and some maybe not. 1: Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Suskind. (1997) This may be the only book ever written based on the sense of smell. Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is a sinister creature whose sense of smell is so uncanny that he can read hidden secrets about people or objects simply by breathing in their odor. When he turns his eerie gift to creating perfumes, his scents become the rage of 18-century Europe. But Grenouille has a darker purpose in mind-to distill a secret fragrance just for himself from the most beautiful women in France. 2: The Trickster by Muriel Gray. (1997) There’s trouble in the idyllic Rocky Mountain valley town of Silver. A young cop has been murdered and his body mutilated. A trucker is found frozen to death in his cab amid drifts of snow-although all the doors and windows are shut. And a hotshot skier is slain on the slopes, where his murderer left no footprints in the deep snow. The only man in town with the guts to take on this demonic killer the Indians call the Trickster is Sam Hunt, the son and grandson of Indian shamans. Sam has felt something reawaken in him-and he has heard a call to meet his foe on the summit of Wolf Mountain. 3: A dry Spell by Susie Maloney. (1997) A killer drought and a spate of suspicious fires are destroying Goodlands, North Dakota. When a drifter and rainmaker named Tom Keatley wanders into town, Karen Grange, manager of the local bank, believes he may be Goodlands’ last hope. What neither Tom nor Karen suspects is the disasters that afflict Goodlands’ are acts of vengeance by the ghost of a woman who was murdered a century ago-whose bones lie buried beneath Karen’s house. 4: The Bridesmaid by Ruth Rendell. (1990) This tale of Philip Wardman, a civilized London Man who meets a mysterious actress named Senta at his sister’s wedding. To prove their love, Senta demands that they each murder someone-and then admits that she has killed one of Philip’s enemies. This is a great novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat, turning the pages all night. 5: Night Magic by Tom Tryon. Michael Hawke was a popular street performer in New York, amusing the crowds with his magic tricks. But then he meets an old man whose powers clearly go beyond sleight-of-hand. Seduced by his first encounter with real magic, Michael finds himself drawn deeper and deeper into the mystical arts, all the while trying to balance his love for his girlfriend, Emily, with the demands of his sorcerer-teacher who lures him with the incredible powers of night magic. 6: Dracula Unbound by Brian Aldis. Dracula sends vampire assassins to kill Bram Stoker before he can write his novel/expose Dracula. So Joe Boderland hijacks a time-travel train to 1896 London and teams up with Stoker to defeat the legions of the undead.
